On starter's orders...
It’s been a crazy couple of weeks and I wanted to write a bit of an update on what we’ve been doing, partly for self reflection!
So, we are now an official Scottish Charity, our status was awarded on the 5th November, 13 days after being assigned a Case Officer (I'm quite proud of that)! It wasn’t as horrendous a process as I thought it would be, in fact it was really useful. Although everything is moving so fast, it seems like ages ago.
As well as Chairing The Purple Heart Network, I’ve been acting as Project Coordinator for E-Bike Africa. It’s my first experience of coordinating something like this and it’s been a real learning curve; frustrating and exciting in equal measures.
Organising the expedition has found us hobnobbing with some notable Scottish folk, including Patrick Harvie MSP, who was really encouraging and supportive and Nicola Sturgeon (yes we really did get to meet the First Minister!), who listened to our plans with interest and, although she can’t be there herself, has sent us her best wishes for the Launch Event.
We got a lovely message of support from Mark Beaumont too and on the back of one of his retweets, Bruce and I found ourselves having coffee with Glasgow-based researcher James Bonner. James has been like a serendipitous gift from Mother Earth and has already contributed so much, you can read more about James and his work here.
If you've been following our progress you probably know that the first leg of E-Bike Africa is headed for the UN Climate Change Conference, COP21, in Paris and I couldn’t possibly blog without mentioning the tragic events that took place in the city last Friday. We were shocked and stunned, like people all over the world, so when Susanne from Pedelec Adventures arrived on Saturday from Berlin we had an emergency team talk. We re-evaluated our plans and discussed whether or not to change them, everyone agreed that as long as COP21 goes ahead, we’ll be there too, to send a positive message of support and show solidarity.
So, as we're under starter's orders we’ve been putting the finishing touches to the E-Bike Africa Launch - Bruce and Susanne leave at 10am on Thursday 19 November 2015 from Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow (where else?) to cover the first 800km of the 20,000km expedition. Please come down to wave them off and help The Purple Heart Network launch our first global action on climate change.
